Soil Wealth ICP is excited to team up with AgriKnow to connect vegetable growers with ongoing observations and results from our demonstration site trial at Tarwin, Victoria using interactive online technology.
The Tarwin site in South Gippsland is hosted by Schreurs & Sons, approximately 150 kilometres south-east of Melbourne. It aims to maintain soil carbon in a clay loam greenfield site which is gradually being converted from pasture to a vegetable production system rotation, predominantly celery, spinach and leek.
The trial is working to enhance soil structure, nitrogen, and phosphorus levels by using green cover crops, compost and minimum tillage practices.
A highlight of the platform is the opportunity to take a virtual walk through the site and compare each treatment and its effect on key soil parameters and crop growth. There is also an option to click an icon which provides a 3D cross-section of the soil and root growth.
Key features to explore
- Overview of the trial site including crops and rotation, soil type and texture, climate and microclimate impacts
- Summary of the trial method including overview of four treatments
- 3D trial site model showing crop growth comparison per treatment
- 360 degree virtual walk throughs of both celery and leek crops at 6 weeks establishment
- Aerial and NDVI imagery of the site.
The platform also houses existing resources developed from the site including:
- Updates on crop growth and establishment
- A video with grower Adam Schreurs on why he is hosting the trial
- Data on carbon and nitrogen levels
- A video on why carbon is so important
- Understanding labile carbon test results.
