In November 2025, growers, agronomists and advisors came together in Ayr, north Queensland, for a hands-on soil health field walk and workshop tailored to the tropical conditions of the region.

The collaboration between Soil Wealth ICP, Bowen Gumlu Growers Association, WaterWise Together and VegNET was hosted at the Ayr Research Station.

With north Queensland facing unique climatic pressures including wet-season rainfall, erosion risk and moisture management challenges, the workshop provided a valuable opportunity for growers to see soil improvement strategies in action.

Dr Kelvin Montagu (AHR/Soil Wealth ICP) guided the group through the site and facilitated discussions focused on cover cropping for soil health and productivity over summer.

Together with local growers and industry partners, Kelvin explored practical systems that build soil structure, enhance biology, improve nutrient retention and help manage erosion pressure.

Attendees were able to get into the field, dig into soil profiles and compare ground cover between treatments,  bringing concepts off the page and into the paddock.

Key discussions on the day included:

  • Selecting cover crop species to align with farm goals
  • Moisture management and maintaining ground cover through wet periods
  • Strategies to reduce physical soil losses caused by erosion
  • Improving nutrient cycling and retention
  • Managing cover crop residue and transitioning into the next crop
  • Local challenges, barriers and practical adoption pathways.

With an emphasis on local relevance, attendees were encouraged to discuss what is working for them, current challenges and how practices might be adapted for north Queensland conditions.

The workshop provided an important opportunity for participants to connect with their wider network and local supporting programs.
