In 2024, the Soil Wealth ICP project started a two-year collaboration with the New South Wales Local Land Services (LLS) to showcase soil-friendly practices at the LLS Demonstration Farm at Richmond Lowlands.
The aim was not only to improve the soil conditions at the site, but also to lead by example, guiding vegetable growers of the Sydney region on their soil health journey.
Key points
- This trial tested cover crops and reduced tillage as practical, soil-friendly options for Sydney vegetable growers
- A modified rotary hoe was used to trial reduced tillage, making it accessible without costly new machinery
- Sweet corn yields were comparable under reduced and conventional tillage, showing that reduced tillage did not compromise production
- Benefits of reduced tillage include lower costs (fuel, labour, machinery wear) and improved soil biology
- Field days associated with this site demonstrate to growers how cover crops can support soil structure, weed management and long-term soil health.
